Valuable research within the Clothing Industry comes to an end as the two (2) year Diploma Course syllabus is completed. This is endorsed by the SABS Clothing Department, Freudenberg Non Wovens, Clothing Industry Training Board and various Clothing & Textile Manufacturers.
Design your Future launched. Design your Future gets launched. This competition is aimed at all Grade 12 learners, and the general public whereby they submit sketches according to a theme, submit them to the Design School. Finalists are then chosen, and the winner and finalists compete at the Graduation Fashion Show. First prize for this competition is a fully paid two-year bursary to study Clothing Design and Technology at our institution.
One Service Award. The principal, Marlene Dreyer receive a “One Service Award”, an accolade from Sanlam and the North West Record for excellent service.
1st Advertising Fashion Show. The City Mall comes to a virtual standstill, as the North West School of Design presents their 1st Advertising Fashion Show. An Advertising Fashion Show is a fantasy fashion show, whereby students design, make and model an outfit for a specific tenant in the mall.
1st Graduation Fashion Show. The North West School of Design present their 1st Graduation Fashion Show. This is the showpiece of the Design School, whereby their graduating class of 1999&2000 receive various prizes at this prestigious evening.

Editorial in the “Pursuit – Clothing and Textile Magazine.” The Pursuit – Clothing and Textile Magazine runs an editorial on the 1st Graduation Fashion Show. Gaynor Khan, the Designer of the Year receives numerous job offers as a direct result of this.
2nd Advertising Fashion Show. The City Mall in Klerksdorp in conjunction with the North West School of Design, hosts the 2nd Advertising Fashion Show. A fun day was had by all.
Businesswoman of the Year finalist. The South African Council for Businesswomen, in conjunction with ABSA Bank, selects principal, Marlene Dreyer as one of the Businesswomen of the Year finalists.
2nd Graduation Fashion Show. The 2nd Graduation Fashion Show of the North West School of Design is held. Again, it is the “most talked about event” of Klerksdorp. The local newspaper, also covers the event, and publishes photographs of the students’ winning designs.

“Pursuit – Clothing and Textile Magazine” The Pursuit – Clothing and Textile Magazine, runs an editorial on the success of the 2nd Graduation Fashion Show.
Vukani nationwide finalist! Hannes Brits, bursary student of the North West School of Design is selected as a finalist for the 8th Annual Standard Bank and South African Fashion Designers Association / Vukani Awards. Hannes got selected amongst 3000 entries, as one of the 12 finalists in this prestigious competition.
Career Expo 2002 At the Career Expo 2002 for Grade 12 students, the North West School of Design put up a stunning display. Receives local newspaper coverage of their stand.
“Patternmaking Instrument news.” Marlene Dreyer designs and copyrights a patternmaking instrument for the use of drafting basic block patterns. Full-time and part-time students benefit from the use of this, as patternmaking is simplified.
Prior to this, various block making instruments were imported, tested and tested but due to incorrect fitting results, and difficult instructions an alternative was sought. Hence the development of a patternmaking instrument that overcomes problems of price, availability, accuracy and simplicity.
Local newspaper, once again features an article titled, “Invention puts city on the word map.”
“Patternmaking Instrument news – part 2”. The North West Record, reports on the successful development of the Patternmaking Instrument designed by Marlene. Due to interest shown from the home seamstresses and various training institutes, Marlene decides to market the instrument nationally. Registration of the patent and in-depth market research is started with the assistance of Victoria Koorzen. Marlene and Vicky join forces to establish a closed corporation: X!Act Design cc, which will market and distribute the instrument together with various products related and used in Pattern Construction.

3rd Annual Advertising Fashion Show. 3rd Annual Advertising Fashion Show got held in the City Mall in Klerksdorp, whereby students make, design and model an outfit for a tenant of the Mall. Again, the newspaper, reports on the successes of the event.
“Boss of the Year” Marlene is awarded, “Boss of the Year” by the Hit Parade and staff and students of the North West School of Design.

Businesswoman of the Year! The Wesvaal Chamber of Business selects, Marlene as Businesswoman of the Year. Remarkable achievement! , and the local newspaper reports on the winners in the various categories.
2nd Vice President of the Wesvaal Chamber of Business. Marlene, also get selected as 2nd Vice President of the Wesvaal Chamber of Business for period January 2003 – December 2003.
Vukani Finalist! Renette Uys, second-year full time student at the North West School of Design gets selected as finalist for the 9th Annual Vukani / South African Fashion Designers Association competition.
City Council proposal. The Klerksdorp City Council accepts a proposal from the Interior Décor students of the North West School of Design to re-decorate all the various City Halls over a five year period, thus enabling the students the opportunity and experience for these projects.
4th Annual Advertising Fashion Show. The North West School of Design and City Mall in Klerksdorp again host an outstanding Advertising Fashion Show. Students have great fun, and receive coverage in the newspaper and members of the community writes letters to the newspaper congratulating them on their successes.
May 2003-1 – Bursary student announcement. Clyde Bennett from Vereeniging takes part in the “Fantasy Fashion Competition” that gets hosted by the North West School of Design and Potchefstroom Herald newspaper of Potchefstroom. Clyde had to design outfits for the newspaper using the newspaper as material for his garments. Clyde wins first prize in this competition, which is a full-time bursary to study Clothing Design and Technology at the North West School of Design, commencing January 2004.
1st Riverwalk Advertising Fashion Show. Following in the successes of the City Mall in Klerksdorp, the Riverwalk in Potchefstroom hosts their 1st Annual Advertising Fashion Show. A first for the Riverwalk and a first for the North West School of Design in Potchefstroom.
X!Act Design Patternmaker ™ patented. The X!Act Design Patternmaker™ designed by Marlene Dreyer is patented, and launched at SAITEX. The SAITEX media desk announces this as the “most innovative” product at the 2003 exhibition.
The success of the Patternmaker™ also receives exposure in the following publications / newspapers – Pursuit Clothing and Textile Magazine, Business Day, Klerksdorp Record and Your News.
Accolade for by Wesvaal Chamber. The local chamber of business, the Wesvaal Chamber of Business awards Marlene with the “proud 2b Klerksdorp Award” for the development of the X!Act Design Patternmaker™ at their annual gala event which gets held in October 2003.
4th Graduation Fashion Show The event of the year gets hosted again by the North West School of Design. The North West School of Design presents their 4th Annual Graduation Fashion Show whereby students receive accolades for their hard work throughout their two year diploma course. Vukani finalist! For the third consecutive year in a row, the North West School of Design provides a finalist for the Vukani / South African Fashion Designers Association competition which will be hosted in May 2004 in Pretoria.

5th Annual Advertising Fashion Show. The North West School of Design and City Mall host their 5th Annual Advertising Fashion Show to the great excitement of students and tenants of the City Mall. Again various local newspapers cover the event.
1st Bachelors Auction. As part of the latest fundraising project of the North West School of Design, they host a “bachelor auction” whereby various men in the community take part in an auction, whereby they are “sold” to the highest bidder in order to raise funds for the upcoming Graduation Fashion Show which will be hosted in October 2004.
Nationwide winner! Clyde Bennett, (bursary student) of the North West School of Design was selected as finalist for the Vukani / South African Fashion Designers Association competition. Clyde walks away as overall nationwide winner in this competition, in so doing the North West School of Design extremely proud!
Woman kidnapped! In build-up to the “Annual go kart race competition” between the North West School of Design and Boston Business College, the students of North West School of Design kidnap their principal, keeping her for ransom and released her when all their demands were met.
North West School of Design end up winning both the spirit cup and actual race, against their long last rivals – Boston Business College.
Jose designs for TK. Graduate, Designer of the Year 2004 (Jose de Canha) which is employed by Michael Bezuidenhout of Parys, designs outfit for songbird, TK Butterfly for the Annual SAMA Awards 2004.
Finalist for nationwide handbag competition. Nadia Lohann, second year student at the North West School of Design, gets selected as nationwide finalist, for the South African Fashion Week Annual handbag-designing competition.
Announcement of competition. The North West School of Design and Potchefstroom Herald announce that they will be hosting their 2nd Annual Fantasy Fashion Competition. Competition that is open to Grade 12’s and general public, whereby they have to design, make and model an outfit using the Potchefstroom Herald as medium for their garments.

Cape Town Fashion Festival participant. Clyde Bennett (current second year) student at the North West School of Design is invited by fashion guru, Dion Chang to participate as designer at the Cape Town Fashion Festival 2004.
Bernina competition winner. In the nationwide, Bernina – “Lapjol” competition, first year student, Gert-Johan Coetzee is selected as overall nationwide winner in this competition. Gert-Johan also walks away with the 2nd prize in this competition.

5 Finalists for nationwide competition. The North West School of Design produces five (5) finalists for top design awards. Gert-Johan Coetzee, Sylvester Falata, Joanna Browne, Fanie Jansen van Vuuren and Sophi Sidu get selected for the 2005 Vukani / South African Fashion Designers Association competition this year. Only fifteen finalists are chosen throughout South Africa. They will represent the North West School of Design in May 2005.
“True Love” magazine features ex-graduated student. Mercia Matlhaku, (Designer of the Year 2002) and graduate from class of 2001 & 2002 features in “True Love” magazine as up-and coming fashion designer.
“Designer Baby born” Principal of the North West School of Design, Marlene Oosthuizen gives birth to Charles Nic Oosthuizen on 8 March 2005.
Bridal Africa semi-finalists. One graduated student, (Mari Grobler) and one first year student (Bruna Tovela) get selected by Bridal Africa as semi-finalists for their nationwide bridal competition that will be hosted later this year.
Coverage by the “Star newspaper”. Two second year students, Joanna Browne and Gert-Johan Coetzee receive coverage in the “Star” newspaper for the forthcoming 11th Vukani / South African Fashion Designers Association competition, in the article “Africa in Fashion land”.
Vukani awards shine on North West School of Design students. Gert-Johan Coetzee and Sophie Sidu, walks away with prizes at the 11th Annual Vukani / South African Fashion Designers Association competition. Gert-Johan is selected as “Haute Couture / High Fashion 2005” winner, and Sophi Sidu, as “Innovative Designer 2005” winner at the competition.
Employment beckons two up-and coming student designers. Two other finalists for the 11th Annual Vukani / South African Fashion Designers Association gets approached by Anneh Getaneh, owner of African Mosaique in Johannesburg as designers once qualified. Anneh Getaneh, is a former international supermodel and founder and managing director of African Mosaique – this international enterprise focuses on fashion and culture. Her ranges also got showcased at the Kennedy Centre in Washington DC, the Fashion Institute in New York, as well as the as at the “Carousel de Louvre” in Paris, France.
2nd Annual Bachelors Auction held. In a success of the Bachelors Auction of 2004, a 2005 Bachelors Auction gets held to raise funds for the students’ Annual Graduation Fashion Show.
“BEE” in progress. Legal proceedings, regarding BEE – Black Economic Empowerment begin in all earnest at the North West School of Design.
“July fever …” Television presenter, Sandy Ngema approaches, Gert-Johan Coetzee to design her outfit for the July horse-racing handicap. The design received coverage in the “YOU” magazine of 14 July 2005.
Design your Future launched. The Annual Design your Future competition is officially launched whereby a Grade 12 learner or member of the public wins a full-time bursary to study Clothing Design and Technology at the North West School of Design commencing their studies in January 2006.
“Students design for Potchefstroom Beauty Academy” Five full-time students of the North West School of Design got approached by the Potchefstroom Beauty Academy to exclusively design garments for their ten finalists to wear. Gert-Johan Coetzee, Joanna Browne, Fanie Jansen van Vuuren, Anel Botha and Nadia Lohann are over the moon with excitement.

Student designs garments for Miss Klerksdorp 2005. Nadia Lohann, current second year student at the North West School of Design, gets approached by local newspaper, the Record (with a reader total of 30 000 – 40 000) readers to design garments for the 2005 Miss Klerksdorp finalists.
“Errol Arendz “exposed”. First year, bursary student, Anel Botha creates a stir in the fashion industry as she sees a potential copy of a Valentino design by Errol Arendz. The “Rapport” Sunday newspaper got informed and they take the story further in their article titled “Arendz se hy het nie afgekyk by Valentino …” Rapport – 7 August 2005.
Laborie / Bridex Cape 2005 finalist. First year, bursary student, Lelani Blignaut gets selected as nationwide finalist for the Laborie / Bridex Cape Young Designer Fashion Show. Only twenty finalists throughout South Africa get chosen, and Lelani makes it to the top ten in South Africa.
Accolade for Sylvester Falata. Current, second year student, Sylvester Falata assists in presenting a range for the “African Mosaique 2005/06” collection. The Citizen of 17 September 2005 reports on this story in their article, “A mosaique of richness.”

“Stunning Student 2006” launched. The North West School of Design and Your City newspaper launches “Stunning Student 2006”. This competition is aimed at all students from tertiary institutes to enter competition, whereby members of the public SMS for their favourite “stunning student”. After many votes of SMS’es the following students won the following: Meryke Meyer won this competition, and 2nd place belonged to Akofa Mothusi and Shani Swanepoel took 3rd place.
Bridex here we come! Six fulltime students of the North West School of Design got selected as semi-finalists for the “Bridex 2006” competition. Anel Botha (bursary student) and Monique Deale got selected in the Avant Garde / Evening Wear category.
Monique Fortuin, Lee-Ann Nel, Shani Swanepoel and Neelufer Patel got selected as semi-finalists in the Menswear Category.
Gert-Johan Coetzee (Graduated student of 2005), and Designer of the Year 2005, also got selected as semi-finalist in the Avant Garde / Eveningwear category.
SA Young Designer!
Gert-Johan Coetzee, (Designer of the Year 2005) and ex-graduate of North West School of Design got awarded the “Young Designer of the Year” award at the Cape Town Fashion Festival. This prize was handed to Gert-Johan by Finance Minister, Trevor Manuel. This remarkable achievement include prizes of R10 000 cash, as well as contracts to design for Brumilda van Rensburg (SA actress – Egoli fame) and Joanne Strauss (ex Miss South Africa.)
Bridex Menswear nationwide winner. Neelufer Patel, first year student of the North West School of Design, walks away as nationwide winner in the “Menswear category.” The three other menswear finalists, Shani Swanepoel, Neelufer Patel and Monique Fortuin, also makes it as finalists.
Design your Future launched. The North West School of Design launches, their Design Your Future competition, whereby Grade 12 learner of member of the public can win a bursary to the value of R21 000 to study Clothing Design and Technology at the institution.

North West Province Youth Commission Award. The North West School of Design walks away with one of the highest accolades achievable by the Premier of the North West Province, Mrs. Edna Molewa during December 2006 in Rustenburg. The North West School of Design achieves, third place in the Provincial Youth Commission “Entrepreneurship and Job Creation” category. Mayor of Klerksdorp, Mr. China Dodovu contacts the North West School of Design during January 2007, for a special photo shoot and to congratulate them on this achievement.

Student invited to showcase. Monica Howard, second year student at the North West School of Design is granted the opportunity to showcase garments at the Cape Town and Durban Fashion Week in May 2007.
Students selected as semi-finalists for Bridal Competition. Three fulltime students of the North West School of Design get selected as semi-finalists for Bridal Africa Young Designers Competition 2007. It has been the third consecutive year that the North West School of Design has been representing this competition, with either finalists or semi-finalists.
Shani Swanepoel (Showstopper 2006 First year students), currently second year student and finalist for the same competition in 2006 (Menswear Category), Karien Pretorius (Top 5 Achiever First Year 2006) now also a second year student and Caroline Potgieter (First Year Best Designer 2006) now second year student will represent the North West School of Design. This competition will draw to a close on the 25th of May 2007 at Gallagher Estate in Johannesburg.
Nationwide finalist. Caroline Potgieter (Bursary student), gets selected as nationwide finalist for the Bridal Africa Young Designers Competition. It is the third year in succession that the North West School of Design provides finalists for this competition. In May 2006, Neelufer Patel (also from the North West School of Design) walked away as the nationwide winner in the Menswear Category.
Another nationwide finalist. Graduated student, Anél Botha, get selected as one of four nationwide finalists for the Huisgenoot / You Gommagomma Ubuntu Fashion Challenge. Anél Botha graduated from the North West School of Design in 2006, as “Designer of the Year”, and one of the top five students in her class. Bridal Africa 2007 news. Caroline Potgieter, (Bursary student 2006&2007) wins second-runner up in the nationwide Bridal Africa Young Designers Competition – Avant Garde / Ladies Category, with her design “Opulence” that got featured in the Beeld – Jip insert.
SABC interviews student. Neelufer Patel, (current second year student), and winner of the Bridal Africa 2006 (Menswear category), gets interviewed on SABC Africa on July 8, 2007. This magazine programme that she got interviewed on pertained to woman in fashion in Africa.
Flamwood Walk Advertising Fashion Show. The North West School of Design in conjunction with the Flamwood Walk Regional Shopping Centre puts up their (Flamwood Walk) Advertising Fashion Show. Over 25 tenants participate, and reviews on Advertising Fashion Show appear in the local newspaper, the Record and national newspaper, “Noordwes Beeld.”
Miss Klerksdorp prizes. The North West School of Design sponsors, Miss Klerksdorp 2008 with a six (6) month bursary to study Interior Decorating at the North West School of Design. Her studies will commence in February 2008

Blood Donation Drive In a bid to do something for the community, the North West School of Design in conjunction with the South African National Blood Transfusion Service (SANBS) host their second blood donation day at the North West School of Design. Janine Myburgh, current second year student get selected as CONTINENTAL finalist for the prestigious Vukani / South African Fashion Designers Association (SAFDA) competition. This is the 5th year that students’ from the North West School of Design get selected for this nationwide African competition.
Gert-Johan Coetzee official designer for SA celebrity, Sandy Ngema. Gert-Johan Coetzee, graduate student (class of 2004&05) gets bestowed the honour of a lifetime in being selected as official designer for Sandy Ngema for the fourth (4th) season of Strictly come Dancing. Local newspaper, the Klerksdorp Record and Noordwes Beeld acclaims his successes thus far.
Bridal Africa 2008, 2 nationwide finalists! Graduate student, *Monique Deale (class of 2005&06) and current second year student, FX Prins get selected as nationwide finalists for Bridal Africa 2008. Bridal Africa serves as a platform for up-and-coming fashion designers to make their name “seen” in the fast paced world of fashion. The gala event will take place on 7 and 8 March 2008 at Gallagher Estate in Johannesburg.

North West School of Design – Photographic Expo Premiere! A very first for the North West School of Design! The North West School of Design hosts their FIRST PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPO of photographs of students completing the Photography Course. Carla Marx, from Leeudoringstad walks away with the laurels, as presenting the “Best Portfolio” at the event. This was attended by members of the public, and students received great acclaim for their photographs. A photo in the collection of Carla Marx, appears in the Klerksdorp Record.
Graduate Designer and socialite join forces. Uyanda Mbuli and graduate student (class of 2004&2005) Gert-Johan Coetzee join forces, in Diamond Face Couture, dressing the high flyers of the social scene. Gert-Johan Coetzee, is the designer behind Sandy Ngema “Strictly come dancing” fame. The Sowetan (16 April 2008) takes this story further in their article, “Glamour and style.” Gert-Johan has won numerous awards contributing to the fashion industry in South Africa.
“In focus” The Klerksdorp Midweek (6 May 2008) publishes an array of photographs in the newspaper of photographs that was taken at the Photographic Expo 2008.
North West Bridal and Matric Farewell Expo St Andrews guesthouse hosts North West Bridal & Matric Farewell Expo, whereby local designers display their garments to the public. Two graduate students from North West School of Design, Anél Botha (Designer of the Year 2006), and José de Canha (Designer of the Year 2003) which joined forces in launching their label, “Anha-K couture” was also there. The local newspaper, the Klerksdorp Record was there to take some photos.
Model Casting The Klerksdorp Midweek places article requesting members of the public who wish to be casted as models for the North West School of Design, Graduation Fashion Show 2008.
Design your Future 2008 The North West School of Design launches their Annual Design your Future competition. This competition is aimed at talented youngsters who wish to pursue a career in Clothing Design. Every year the North West School of Design launches this competition whereby one lucky person will win a bursary to study Clothing Design fulltime with a bursary sponsored by the North West School of Design.

Corsets Galore! All finalists in the Miss Klerksdorp 2008 pageant wear corsets that have been designed by current Clothing Design and Technology students. The Klerksdorp Records places two photographs of corsets that were designed by students, Yvonne Jansen van Vuuren and Alicia Erasmus.
Graduation Fashion Show 2008 At the Annual Graduation Fashion Show 2008, for the class of 2007&2008 the Klerksdorp Record reports on the high standard of the student designers’ work. Award winning students that evening include:

North West School of Design do good for the community! The North West School of Design sees a plight for a potential student, Minah Dunywa who is interested in studying Clothing Design. The North West School of Design offers her a part-bursary for her first year of study commencing January 2009. The bursary that North West School of Design has graciously given her is subject to scholastic performance at the North West School of Design. Should the student, “shape up” the bursary will be re-instated for her second year of study, i.e.: 2010.

Nationwide Winner! Janine Myburgh, current second year Clothing Design student walks away as the nationwide winner in the Steinhoff Summer Cup 2009. Janine’s design was featured on the front page of the Sunday Times Newspaper on 30 November 2008. Another first for the North West School of Design on the same day, was when Gustav Kamfer, also finalist for the competition walked away with “best head-piece/hat” for the day for this competition.
Other prizes that Janine also scooped was a trip aboard the FTV yacht, R10 000 cash and a spread in the Cleo magazine.

Minah’s dream comes true! Minah Dunywa, a talented Grade 12 student (2008) gets a golden opportunity from the North West School of Design to complete her two-year diploma course in Clothing Design and Technology at the North West School of Design. The North West School of Design grants her a full bursary which will be subject to renewal in 2010 for her second year of studies. *(See October 2008).
Blood Donation Drive #2 The North West School of Design, host a Blood Donation Day in conjunction with the South African National Blood Transfusion Service (SANBS) whereby blood is donated on the premises of the North West School of Design, and public awareness is created to show them the need for blood donation in the community. Klerksdorp Record places a photograph of this community building exercise. *(See November 2007)
Glamour magazine – here we come! Gert-Johan Coetzee (Graduate student) class of 2004 & 2005 which launched the label, Diamond Face Couture with socialite, Uyanda Mbuli gets featured in the February issue of Glamour magazine in their article, “Scarlet Fever.”
Gert-Johan is one of the most successful graduates of the North West School of Design to date.

The North West School of Design’s very popular part-time course, Photography receives coverage in the Klerksdorp Record. The 2nd Annual Photography Expo was held on the 19th of March 2009 at the Neser Hall at the Klerksdorp Library. All students received their certificates upon the completion of their course. Few students got special commendations namely:

7 Nationwide semi-finalists, for Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award. The North West School of Design has what it takes.
Seven fulltime Clothing Design and Technology students from the North West School of Design are selected as nationwide semi-finalists for the Vodacom / Durban July Young Designer Awards. Yolande Maree, Nadine Roodt, Rudi Grobler, Lindokuhle Cuba, Sinazo Gulani, Ofelia Andrade and Joani Pieterse are bestowed the honour. These students will have to make their respective garment for final judging on the 27th of May 2009 in Bloemfontein.
Tatum Keshwa (current Miss SA), David Tlale (well-known SA designer) will be of the judges for the finals.
The student that walks away as the nationwide winner will amongst other prizes receive R10 000.00 and the winning college, R 30 000.00. The winning student also wins a trip to the London Fashion Week next year.

Front Page Dress.
The Rio Resort in Klerksdorp hosted their Matric Farewell Show on the 2nd of May 2009, and asked a variety of designers in and around Klerksdorp to showcase their garments. Some graduate designers from the North West School of Design also participated and a design of Clemen Coetzee (Graduate student – class of 2007 & 2008) displayed on the front page of the Klerksdorp Midweek. Congratulations Clemen!
City Mall (Klerksdorp) Advertising Fashion Show 2009 – The North West School of Design transform the City Mall in Klerksdorp by means of their Annual Advertising Fashion Show. This fashion show is whereby students, design, make and model an outfit for a tenant in the mall. This is the 6th Advertising Fashion Show that the City Mall in Klerksdorp hosts.
River Square – (Vereeniging)
Advertising Fashion Show 2009 The River Square Mall in Vereeniging, hosts their very first Advertising Fashion Show on 16 May, whereby the students, design, make and model an outfit for the participating tenants in their Mall. All participation fees that get paid by tenants go towards student fundraising, for their Graduation Fashion Show in
Janine, just do it! In the latest edition (June 2009) of Get-it magazine, displays human interest article on Janine Myburgh, graduate designer (class of 2007&2008). Janine was nationwide African finalist for Vukani 2008, as well as nationwide Winner for the Steinhoff Young Designer Award which was held in November 2008. Miss Klerksdorp 2009 Sponsorship The North West School of Design –first year design students of 2008 designed corsets for the finalists of Miss Klerksdorp 2009. The winner of Miss Klerksdorp 2009 will win her corset that she wore on the evening of the pageant. Bonita Griessel, new Miss Klerksdorp 2009 wins a corset that was designed by Kobus Rautenbach (current second year student, as well as Bursary Award Winner 2007) from the North West School of Design.

Anha K – Evening gowns. Anha-K couture – (which belongs to José de Canha – Graduate designer 2003 – Designer of the Year 2003, and Anél Botha – Graduate designer 2006 – Designer of the Year 2003) is requested by Klerksdorp Record to dress the finalists in the senior category of the annual Miss Klerksdorp 2009 beauty pageant. Coincidentally, Jose also dressed the winning Miss Klerksdorp 2008. (See September 2008 – Front Page Dress)
Face of Rio judge – our own José de Canha. José de Canha, Graduate Designer (class of 2002 & 2003) and well known local fashion designer is requested by Rio Resort and Your City newspaper to judge the “Face of Rio” beauty pageant which was hosted on 12 September 2009 at the Rio Resort in Klerksdorp.
Gert-Johan Coetzee and Uyanda Mbuli officially launch, DFC. Graduate student, Gert-Johan Coetzee (Designer of the Year 2004) and Uyanda Mbuli launches their first DFC – Diamond Face Couture Shop in the Zone in Rosebank, Johannesburg. The YOU magazine of 17 September 2009 was there to take the photos of Gert-Johan and Uyanda, as well as the guests that attended the opening.
Forthcoming Graduation Fashion Show 2009 “Tarentaal”, local newsletter of Zeerust area, places advertisement of the forthcoming, Graduation Fashion Show on 7 November 2009, at the Maracana Convention Centre – Rio Resort, Klerksdorp.
Photography Workshop launched. The North West School of Design and Salome Kotze (Editor of Klerksdorp Record) places advertorial on forthcoming “Interactive Photography Workshop” that will be presented on Saturday, 7 November 2009. Over 15 people attend the workshop, where the finer techniques of photography get explained.

The Miss World pageant chose South Africa’s top ten designers to create evening gowns for the miss world Pageant contestants, amongst them were JJ Schoeman, Malcum Kluk, Marc & Michael & Gert-Johan Coetzee (Diamond Face Couture) Gert-Johan designed Dresses for 15 contestants including – our own Miss South-Africa Tatum Keshwar, Miss Italy, Miss France, Miss Finland, Miss England, Miss Scotland, Miss Germany and miss Guatemala.. Neelufer Patel appointed as Specialist Buyer – Edgars Neelufer Patel, graduated at NWSD 2007 has successfully completed the Edgars Graduate programme, whereby she was trained on the Edcon systems as buyer. Neelufer was one of 7 applicants who were selected from 800 hopefuls and she has now been appointed as specialist buyer for men’s accessories. Congratulations Neelufer.
Gert-Johan – Miss World 2009 Gert-Johan Coetzee, (Graduate student, class of 2004&2005) is one of the top designers chosen in South Africa to dress some of the world’s most beautiful women, for the forthcoming Miss World Beauty Pageant 2009 which was hosted in, Johannesburg.
Vukani finalists 2010 North West School of Design students excel yet again! Three fulltime Clothing Design and Technology students, (Yolande Maree, Nadine Roodt and Joani Pieterse) and graduate student, (FX Prins) get selected as nationwide African finalists in the SAFDA (South African Fashion Designers Association) competition. The finals of this competition will be hosted later this year.
J&B Met , Anel Botha and Gert-Johan Coetzee Anel Botha (Graduate student), class of 2005&2006 get nationwide coverage including, Top Billing magazine programme, whereby her designs for the J&B Met in Cape Town is selected as “Best Themed Couple”. She wins an array of prizes. Another graduate, student, Gert-Johan Coetzee’s design, worn by Thembi Seete walks away with “Best Dress” at the Met.

Advertising Fashion Show (Klerksdorp Record) The North West School of Design hosts yet another, Advertising Fashion Show in the City Mall – Klerksdorp whereby the students, make, design and model for a participating tenant in the mall. This receives coverage in the local newspapers, the Klerksdorp Record and Your City newspaper.
Ad Fashion Show (Your City) The Your City newspaper features photographs of students of the North West School of Design’s Graduation Fashion Show that was hosted at the City Mall in Klerksdorp. This is an Annual fundraising effort of the students of the North West School of Design to the great delight of the public.

Over 220 models attended the casting session, whereby models were selected for the Platinum Fashion Festival.

Final 6! After careful consideration, a final cut is made for the 10 finalists, and Yolande Maree, (second year student) now is a top 6 finalist for this above mentioned competition. These designers will have their garments showcased at the Cape Town Fashion Week in November 2010 and compete for the title of Nokia / Foschini Young Designer Award in August 2010 also in Cape Town.
YOU spectacular Awards! The You and Huisgenoot, annual Awards takes place in Johannesburg, and two graduate students of the North West School of Design dress South Africa’s A-list celebrities. Gert-Johan Coetzee dresses ex-Miss SA Cindy Nell-Roberts and Anel Botha dresses, Gugu Zuma, (Isidingo actress) and daughter of Jacob Zuma. Both these two designs feature prominently in the You and Huisgenoot magazines.

SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR 2010 At the annual banquet hosted by the Wesvaal Chamber of Business, whereby business people get recognition for hard work and outstanding excellence, the North West School of Design, scoops the title of “Small Business of the Year 2010.” This is the third time, that the North West School of Design receives accolade from the Wesvaal of Chamber of Business.

Miss Crossing announced! In collaboration between the Crossing Shopping Centre and the North West School of Design – Mafikeng Campus, Pertunia Mosweusweu was announced as “Miss Crossing 2010”. This was the first time that the Crossing Shopping Centre had a queen. Pertunia’s list of duties will include duties allocated by the Crossing and promotional work for North West School of Design.
Graduation Fashion Show 2010 The Klerksdorp Recreation Centre came to standstill on 6 November 2010, when the graduating class of 2009&2010, presented their Graduation Fashion Show. Thabo wins bursary! Gert-Johan Coetzee, does something for the fashion industry. After receiving numerous applications, Gert-Johan awards bursary to Thabo Makhuzeni from Stilfontein. Ilze chosen as nationwide finalist. Ilze Delport, current second year student of North West School of Design has been selected as nationwide finalist for the Rotary Club – Vanderbijlpark Dress Designer of the Year 2011 competition. This is reported in the local newspaper, the Your City.
Skouspel Plus chooses NWSD. Three graduate students, of North West School of Design were chosen by the stylist of Skouspel Plus, Michael Veldsman. These students include: Althea van der Linde (Designer of the Year 2010), Kobus Rautenbach (trainee lecturer at NWSD) and Anel Botha (Designer of the Year 2006). These three designers will be designing garments, for internationally acclaimed Grammy winner, Jennifer Jones, idols finalist 2002, Bianca le Grange as well as “The Flooze” from the TV programme, 7e Laan. These garments will be showcased at the Skouspel Plus in Cape Town.
Co-incidentally, two graduates were also chosen in 2010 to dress some of SA’s cream of the music industry.

Kobus shines in the Potchefstroom Herald Graduate student, class of 2008&2009, Kobus Rautenbach, now trainee lecturer at North West School of Design receives coverage that he and some of his graduate students from NWSD will be dressing the cream of the SA music industry, including Jennifer Jones and Biance Le Grange. This is for the Skouspel Plus programme which will be held in Cape Town.

Vodacom Durban July semi-finalists. Two second year students, Ilze Delport and Stiena Hoffmann, as well as third third year student, Melanie Grobler gets selected as Vodacom Durban July semi-finalists for their Young Designer competition. The judging will take place on 26 May 2011 in Bloemfontein. Semi-finalist, Stiena Hoffmann was also selected as semi-finalist in 2010.

SAMA Awards 2011 and graduate, Gert-Johan Coetzee. Graduate student, Gert-Johan Coetzee had a tough time at the SAMA Awards 2011, as he had to design nine dresses for Bonang Matheba, who was the MC. (See article in You magazine, “Seen and Heard”, she looked ravishing no the less. He also designed for Louise Carver, who made it as one of the “best dressed” according to the People magazine.
Marlene’s book hits the news! Marlene Oosthuizen, the principal of North West School of Design, released her second book, “The Modern Corsettiere”. This is the second book published by the principal, and this will enable all people to design corsets, using the trusted methods by Marlene. Michelle and Morgan take the crown! Michelle Lotz is crowned the new Miss Klerksdorp for 2011/12. Morgan McBride also was crowned as Miss Klerksdorp Teen 2011/12. Both these stunners are models for North West School of Design as well. Congratulations, girls!
José’s success … Graduate from North West School of Design, Jose de Canha, class of 2002/03 is commissioned by the organisers of Miss Klerksdorp to dress the finalists in stunning evening and casual wear.
“Not horsing around …” The horse-racing event of the year, Vodacom Durban July 2011 was particularly successful for graduate from North West School of Design, Anel Botha. Anel and her partner, Graham Calver walked away as winner in the Most Striking Couple 2011, and another of her designs, walked away as the Winner in the Classic Race Day wear. Another design of her, in the Avant Garde category was placed in the Top 10. The local newspaper, the Klerksdorp Record, Beeld and the Daily News reported on this remarkable designer that needs to be reckoned with.
You Spectacular Anel Botha, a graduate from North West School of Design, and designer dressed, Charlize Hogendyk (Elvis Blue’s wife), Alette Winkler (wife to Heinz Winkler), and Bianca le Grange for the You Spectacular which was hosted at Emperor’s Palace. This formidable designer also showcased a range, with the top SA band, the Parlotones as the backdrop. This designer is definitely going places … Watch this spot!

Business Woman of the Year 2011 Marlene Oosthuizen, principal of the North West School of Design, has scooped the award, for “Business Woman of the Year 2011”, this is the second time that she has won this prestigious award, that is awarded by the Wesvaal Chamber of Business. She has also won this award in 2002, in 2003 she was awarded another award and in 2011 her company, the North West School of Design, walked away as the “Small Enterprise of the Year 2010.”
New course for North West School of Design. The North West School of Design has is making their mark in the field of tuition, as they are going to present two new courses from 2012 in their curriculum, which include a three year BA degree in Fashion Design and a three year degree in Fashion Management and Communication. The latter is a first for any institute in SA, as it is a whole new course being presented in SA and North West School of Design is the pioneers in this field, yet again! Well done, to North West School of Design.

Klerksdorp gets a new queen! In a glittering array, the evening of 19 May 2012, saw Nadine du Plessis being crowned as the new Miss Klerksdorp. Graduate student, and well-known designer in Klerksdorp dresses the senior and junior categories in beautiful couture. Students of NWSD also dress the senior finalists in their cocktail wear with corsets.
Anel “shines” again at the Tempo Awards 2012. Anel Botha, again shows her mettle, as she dresses many celebrities for the Tempo Awards 2012. Andriette Norman of Idols fame and Karlien van Jaarsveld is of the many she had dressed for the event.

Live out Loud announcement. Francoise de Villiers was selected as first runner up for the Live out Loud Young Designers Competition, and Karen Human received the award for most innovative and impressive headgear at this nationwide competition. NWSD had 5 nationwide finalists out of a possible 10!
2013Anel dresses Mrs United Nations SA. Graduate designer, Anel Botha dresses Monique Erasmus from Klerksdorp when she was announced the new Mrs United Nations SA. She also dressed, Hesti Enslin, which was announced “Best Evening Wear”. Well done, Anel.
Miss SA 2012 wears Anel Botha Couture. Anel Botha, (Designer of the Year 2006) and established designer, Anel Botha designed a dress for current Miss South Africa 2012, Marilyn Ramos for the L’Ormanis Queens Plate in Cape Town.

Corsets reign supreme at Miss Stellander 2013 Kobus Rautenbach, lecturer, NWSD is a chosen judge at the Miss Klerksdorp 2013 pageant. Gert-Johan Coetzee best dressed mention In an article, of the You magazine (25 April 2013), graduate and now international designer, Gert-Johan Coetzee receives an accolade as one of his dresses were voted as best dressed at SA Fashion Week opening in Sandton. This is not the first time that one of his dresses wins this prestigious prize.
Photography student excel! Current photography student, Liz-Marie Almeida receives first prize for her photograph depicting scavengers at the dumpsite in a local photography competition. 3rd place also went to a current photography student, Jackie Steinschaden.
2nd Advertising Fashion Show 2013 In a second annual event, the North West School of Design hosts an Advertising Fashion Show in Rustenburg at the Waterfall Mall. This fashion show is unique in its sense, that students design, make and model an outfit for a specific tenant of the mall. Fashion Drive for charity. NWSD hosted a fashion drive for Janie Schneider school. This fashion show will take place on 25 May 2013 at Cargo Motors in Klerksdorp, and big names of SA will be seen at the day, Gert-Johan Coetzee and Marilyn Ramos (Miss SA 2012) to name a few. Sindy gets her car (for a week …) Sindy Mare, (current first year BA Fashion design student) wins an internal competition which was hosted by Mercedes Benz – with this prize, she gets the chance to drive a new Mercedes A-class for a week. (See article, “fashion in a class of its own.” )
Sylvester receives coverage in Sunday World Sylvester Falata (graduate – class of 2005), receives great commendations and reviews after his showcase of part of Africa day celebrations which took place on 25 May. Janie Schneider Fashion Show at Cargo Motors – KLERKSDORP. WOW magazine and MOJA magazine of June 2013 covers our event, “Fashion Drive”, that was hosted at Cargo Motors in Klerksdorp. Miss SA 2012, Marilyn Ramos truly graced the event, and students of NWSD hosted a Vintage Fashion Show for the guests. This will become an annual event, and one not to be missed!
New Miss Klerksdorp … is Boitumelo Monare !
Boitumelo Monare, was crowned as the new Miss Klerksdorp 2013. Students of NWSD designed corsets that the senior finalists wore to the event. Junior finalists wore corsets that were designed by Kobus Rautenbach, lecturer at North West School of Design.
Another NWSD Winner at the “races” Monique Deale (Botha), graduate class of 2005&2006 and Showstopper 2006 wins Most Striking Couple at the Vodacom Durban July 2013 with her design. Principal to New York! Principal of North West School of Design has been invited by LIM College in New York to attend a symposium on Fashion – Now and Then, Meaning, Media and Model. She has also been invited to speak about fashion trends in the apartheid area of South Africa. NWSD goes “global” In a press release in the local newspaper, the Klerksdorp Record, report on North West School of Design entering the global market, whereby international institution, City and Guilds approved them as training institute for the their fulltime fashion students. City and Guilds approved North West School of Design due to their policies and regulations and extreme strict guidelines. Well done to NWSD.
NWSD assists “movie” “XJ 1” the movie that is produced locally in Klerksdorp, receives assistance from the Fashion Management & Communication students of NWSD by script assessments but mostly assisting with the wardrobe planning for the forthcoming movie.

GRADUATION FASHION SHOW 2013! The Portuguese Hall in Klerksdorp came to an standstill on 2 November 2013, when the Graduation Fashion Show of North West School of Design hosted their Annual Graduation Fashion Show to close than 600 guests. Over 103 garments graced the catwalk and students were awarded as follows:

– Bernice Scholtz – First Year Best Designer 2013,

Futhermore, Quincy Maroga from Vereeniging won the Gert-Johan Coetzee bursary valued at R 160 000.00.
Rebaone Malane from Mmabatho won the bursary to study Fashion Management & Communication courtesy of NWSD commencing January 2014.
Graduation Fashion Show 2013 The North West School of Design is proud to say that yet another Graduation Fashion Show has successfully been done and dusted. Many students obtained prizes and were mentioned in the local newspaper, The Klerksdorp Record and Noordwes Beeld. The ultimate prize that evening went to John-Wayne Keyser who was announced, “Designer of the Year 2013”. His breathtaking gowns were moderated by graduate designers Anel Botha and Gert-Johan Coetzee. North West School of Design wishes to congratulate him.

Small Business Award 2014 Graduate student, Yvonne Jansen van Vuuren (class of 2009) now a formidable businesswoman in Vryburg receives a “Small Business Award” at a star-studded function in Vryburg. Congratulations, Yvonne!
NWSD goes digital – first for South African fashion design school ! North West School of Design launches a digital fashion show – the first for South African fashion colleges at the 2nd Fashion Talk that was hosted at the Audi Showrooms in July. Students had to design, make and model a fantasy garment with elaborate headpieces. This video was shot by Donovan Roets Photography (graduate – Photography class of NWSD.) Overwhelming responses of the quality of garment were received by the audiences. The Klerksdorp Record (local newspaper) also had a garment made for them entirely made of newspapers by 2nd year BA Fashion Design student, June Burger. A photograph was placed in the Klerksdorp Record.
July – FEVER and Miss South Africa Anel Botha (graduate from North West School of Design) 2006 receives huge coverage as her dress she had designed for current Miss South Africa displays proudly on the front page of the Sunday Times. Well done Anel!
Anel Botha – Huisgenoot South Africa’s favourite family magazine, the “Huisgenoot” interviews Anel Botha in a huge two page spread whereby they talk about the successes Anel had to endure to become one of South Africa’s favourite and most-talked about designers. Anel often dresses A-list celebrities for their red-carpet events including Miss SA 2014, Rolene Strauss.

North West School of Design had the opportunity to dress the senior finalists in corsets designed at the 2013 Graduation Fashion Show. Another accolade for North West School of Design were that Kobus Rautenbach (Graduate 2009) designed the corsets for the junior finalists, Bianca Wolmarans (Part Time Fashion Design Graduate 2013) designed the senior and junior girls opening outfits and for the evening wear both junior and senior finalists were dressed in an awesome evening gowns by graduate, Anel Botha (Graduate 2006). Jose de Canha (Graduate 2003) also designed the evening dress for LeMari Smit, master of ceremonies for the evening. North West School of Design was truly represented at the event!

The annual Gert-Johan Coetzee bursary gets launched in the media. One lucky recipient will win a bursary to study fashion design at North West School of Design, commencing January 2015. The winner will be announced at the forthcoming
Platinum Fashion Festival in November 2014
The Wesvaal Chamber of Business nominates two alumni of North West School of Design in two different categories. Esmene van Dyk of Esmene Couture (class of 2010 & 2011) as “Best Newcomer” and Anel Botha of Anel Botha Couture (class of 2005 & 2006) as “Businesswoman of the Year”. Later that month, Esmene van Dyk, scooped the title of “Best Newcomer”. Marlene Oosthuizen, principal of NWSD also receives special mention at the award ceremony by patron as to say that even her (Marlene’s) students’ receive prizes already. She has won three prizes at the very same event on previous occasions.
The Platinum Fashion Festival hosted by North West School of Design turns out a huge success. The Portuguese Hall in Klerksdorp was packed to the brim as on 8 November 2014, students showcased their various collections to the public. Award winning students that night included:

June Burger, current final year, 3rd year student at North West School of Design gets selected nationwide by Bernina South Africa as winner for their nationwide “Modern Cinderella” media campaign.
NWSD assists CANSA Klerksdorp in their annual Shavathon 2015 whereby money gets raised for cancer throughout South Africa. The Matlosana Mall and Pick and Pay Hypermarket in Klerksdorp hosts these events whereby over R21 000.00 were raised.

This was designed by 3rd year, Bronwyn Len Ferna de La Motte and proudly receives FRONT page of the Klerksdorp Record.
